HP ENVY 14-1050ea Review

December 21st, 2010 No comments

HP ENVY 14-1050eaHP’s Envy 14 is certainly a head-turning laptop. Its clean lines and rounded edges look stunning, with a dimpled bronze finish and an edge-toedge display.

The stylish touchpad is made from a single panel, with areas marked by lines where the buttons should be. The entire panel moves when you press these, and although the action is light and produces a distinct click, the button areas are still sensitive to touch, so the cursor often moves just when you’re about to click. HP EliteBook 8440p Review

November 27th, 2010 No comments

HP EliteBook 8440pThe EliteBook 8440p ultra-portable uses some powerful components.

The Intel Mobility Core i7 processor runs at 2.66GHz, but Turbo Boost provides improved performance in single-threaded applications. This alone is enough to fly through most tasks, but HP has gone a step further, installing Windows 7 Professional to a 160GB solid-state HDD.

The keyboard has flat, rubberised keys that provide very little tactile feedback when typing. Most are full size, but the function keys feel squeezed in at the top of the keyboard tray.

Mouse input can be controlled using either the touchpad or the central touchstick. There are two separate sets of mouse buttons, so you can take your pick. Read more…

HP Pavilion dm3-2040ea Review

November 26th, 2010 No comments

HP Pavilion dm3-2040eaThe HP DM3 looks great from almost every angle. The metallic-effect body is smooth, with rounded corners and few LEDs or shortcut keys to clutter the appearance. The chiclet-style keyboard looks smart and is great to type on. Keys are widely spaced and full-sized, but to avoid breaking the design scheme by adding extra keys, shortcuts such as the volume and brightness keys are paired with the function buttons.

While many laptops do the same, the DM3 sets each shortcut as the default, rather than secondary, action. This is annoying if you frequently use the function keys in combination with the Alt key, as it also requires holding down the Fn key. Read more…

HP Pavilion DV6-2113sa Review

October 2nd, 2010 No comments

HP Pavilion DV6-2113saHP’s Pavilion DV6-2113sa is a chunky laptop with a 15.6in screen, 4GB of memory and a 2.5GHz AMD Turion II M620 processor. Although its screen isn’t particularly large, its weight and bulk make it feel more like a desktop replacement notebook than a typical general purpose laptop.

It has an unassuming but attractive black chassis with reflective silver ring designs both inside and outside the lid. It’s very solidly built and we were pleased to find that the keyboard surround didn’t become warm to the touch at any point during testing. The flat keyboard is traditionally laid out, making it easy to get used to if you’re accustomed to touch-typing on a standard desktop keyboard. A smaller than standard numeric keypad is squeezed in on the right-hand side. Read more…
